Generally, curtains are dry cleaned, but occasionally, especially if unlined, they may be suitable for washing. Every item should come with a care label sewn into the fabric. However, handmade curtains often lack such labels. While the fabric used by curtain makers may be suitable for dry cleaning, this does not necessarily mean the entire curtain should be dry cleaned, as additional materials such as stiffeners, decorative beads, or linings may have been added. As a result, cleaning handmade curtains is always at the owner's risk.
Blackout or thermal linings can deteriorate due to sunlight exposure. To mitigate and assess the risk, curtains are tested with chemicals to identify any potential issues. Despite this precaution, damage—especially to the lining—can still occur, even if testing reveals no immediate problems. If the coating on blackout or thermal linings is damaged, it can affect not only the curtains but also halt the dry cleaning process, as the machine will require a lengthy cleaning cycle before it can be used again. Therefore, we always err on the side of caution regarding cleaning risks.
Occasionally, we may suggest wet cleaning for curtains, as in our experience it is less risky, but in such cases, we always discuss the options with the customer. Curtains that are wet cleaned instead of dry cleaned are typically more challenging to press. Furthermore, the cleaning process should be carried out while the chemicals are at a lower temperature, usually at the start of the day. Shrinkage is also a consideration—3–5% is standard, though this does not guarantee shrinkage will occur, as many variables can influence the outcome.
Curtains should generally be professionally dry cleaned every one to two years to remove accumulated dust, allergens, and odours, or more frequently if smokers or pets are present. Dry cleaning is essential for delicate, lined, or heavy fabrics such as velvet, silk, and wool, in order to prevent shrinking, colour fading, and damage.
Fabric Protection: Specialised, non-water-based solvents protect delicate fabrics from shrinking or losing their colour.
Deep Cleaning: Removes deep-seated dust, mould, and pet dander that regular vacuuming cannot reach, thereby improving indoor air quality.
Specialised Care: Professional cleaners are equipped to handle heavy, lined, or specialised materials such as linen and velvet, ensuring they remain in top condition.
Stain Removal: Dry cleaners can address specific, stubborn stains that might otherwise become permanent if not treated properly.
